Tonight Elmarie & I were at the American University of Beirut to hear the AUB choir & Lebanese Philharmonic perform Bach’s Magnificat & Handel’s Jubilate. The concert concluded with the audience joining in a singing of such great Incarnation hymns as “Hark the Herald Angels Sing.” Afterwards, everyone gathered outside for Christmas carols and the lighting of the AUB Christmas tree.
AUB was founded 150 years ago by a Presbyterian missionary. Today it is pretty much secular, with a Muslim-majority board in a Muslim-majority country. BUT we could still enjoy Christian music of the Incarnation and sing Christmas hymns–all to a packed house of Christians and Muslims together.
