What Makes America Great
This is Geryis, the man who came to fix my A/C today.
As we worked, he started to asking me questions about America. He clearly knew a lot about our country and current events. Eventually he asked about what it would take for him to get a job and move there.
“America is the Human Rights country,” he said.
“Here, where we live, humans treat other humans like animals, but America is different.”
Geryis hit the nail on the head.
That is the country I love. That is the way in which many, many people here view our country.
That is who we are.
…even when we’re not.
Maybe ESPECIALLY when we’re not–when we’re not living as the world’s example of how people should treat other people, a place of Justice and Opportunity and Basic Dignity for all people.
Sometimes it takes what feels like way too long, but eventually a mirror gets shoved in our face and we wince at what we see, and then we actually do something incredibly hard to change that reflection.
Not every country is like that.
“America is my dream,” Geryis said.
Geryis reminded me that here, in America, we have something to be proud of…and something to fiercely protect: Human Rights; Human Opportunity; Human Decency.
–THAT is what makes America truly Great.
