Venders in the streets are a year-round thing here. For some, it’s a way to make a little extra money for the family. For displaced people, it’s often the only job they can get.
This week, I was hanging out with my construction worker friends near my apartment when this guy came by selling roasted almonds and honey-dried figs. He was an enthusiastic salesman and insisted on me trying some of each. After that, it was hard not to buy a kilo of almonds from him. He made sure to give me a few extra figs.
I ran into him again while walking home. He recognized me, greeted me happily, and put a few more dried figs in my hand.
