Fish Shawarma and Taxi Drivers
Had one of the best sandwiches of my life today.
My cab driver was about to get lunch when he got called to pick me up, so he decided to treat me to lunch as well. He took me to this seafood joint that serves “Fish Shwarma” sandwiches (never heard of it either). It was a marinated fish mixture on a caesar salad bed topped with tangy sauce inside a grilled pita. My driver took great care to ensure that my sandwich was properly made to my satisfaction. We hopped back in the cab with our sandwiches. My driver was the perfect host, making sure I had enough napkins and even taking advantage of a red light to squeeze extra lemon juice on my sandwich.
We ate our sandwiches together and I listened to his thoughts about how Jesus relates to today’s troubles in the Middle East. Those are the kinds of conversations people have here.
We arrived at my building and he carried my guitar case to the door, but he wouldn’t accept a tip.
I was his guest.
Even by Middle East standards, this was one of the best sandwiches I’ve ever had. Definitely top five. Of course, the company might have had something to do with it.
This is Middle East hospitality.
